A typical normalized x-ray absorption cross-section as a function of energy is given in Figure 3.1 for a compound with a perovskite structure, La 2 CuO 4 , measured at the Cu Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS), along with X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES), is a subset of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). I show that new information about the compositions and crystal structures of interstellar grains can be derived from measurements of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) above the absorption edges in the spectra of highly extincted and bright X-ray stars. It will be also possible to probe the long-range crystal structures of solid grains by analyzing extended X-ray absorption-edge EXAFS and XANES are becoming interdis ciplinary methods used in solid-state physics, biology, and chemistry, and are making impressive contributions to these branches of science.
